It’s Kotsy, coming at you with a story that’s got a little bit of everything: romance, fall vibes, and one of the coolest backdrops Toronto has to offer. Today, we’re diving into Luke and Hilary’s engagement session at the Evergreen Brick Works. So grab a drink and get cozied up in your favourite sweater because it’s time to enjoy that crisp autumn air in the Don Valley.

Evergreen Brick Works: A Love Story’s Canvas

First up, let’s chat about this dynamite location. Evergreen Brick Works isn’t just any old spot in Toronto; it’s a place where the city’s industrial past and lush greenery collide. Originally a brick quarry, this spot has transformed into an eco-hub that’s all about sustainability and community vibes. It’s the kind of place where you can find art installations one minute and a farmer’s market the next, all nestled in the heart of the Don Valley.

Now you may be wondering why Luke and Hilary landed on this location for their engagement session. Even with a seemingly unlimited options in the city, the Brick Works was a no brainer for them. It’s got that perfect mix of rugged industrial textures and natural beauty. Plus, they’ve got a soft spot for the place, having wandered its paths more than a few times together.

From An Awkward Start to Fun Memories

Imagine starting your photo session feeling a bit out of your element. Like many other couples, that was how Luke and Hilary felt. A tad awkward at first but quickly warming up to the camera, thanks in part to a couple of cold PBRs and a relaxed vibe. Their session wasn’t just about fun poses either; it was about capturing their genuine connection in a place that resonates with their journey together.

Luke and Hilary also wanted their engagement shoot to reflect their personalities: laid-back, fun-loving, and connected to each other and their favorite season. Decked out in cozy flannels and denim – we turned Evergreen Brick Works into their playground, surrounded by the warm hues of autumn and historical preservation done right.

From Online Sparks to Beachside Promises

Meeting online through Plenty of Fish in 2014, Luke and Hilary quickly realized they were a natural fit for each other. Dive bars, mosh pits, weight lifting and tattoos are just some of the many interests they bonded over as their relationship progressed.

Now fast forward past years of concerts and camping to Miami Beach just after New Years 2023. Having already mutually decided they would tie the knot, Luke waited for the right moment with an unusual mix of total confidence and nervousness. Then BAM! Question: popped, whilst they pounded back… coffee!

Reminiscing and Planning

Looking back at the photos from their session, Luke and Hilary are hit will all the fun feels. From their PBR toast to the big laughs as they ran towards to the camera while bumping into each other. Their favorite shot? The candid moments as they walked through the fall-coloured scenery, beers in hand. This is where they felt the most comfortable and themselves.

Now with the engagement session wrapped, all that’s left is to finish planning their wedding! Keeping with the non-traditional vibe, they plan to lean in to the rich history of their epic venue – El Mocambo. I can only begin to imagine all the cool ways they’ll make this wedding uniquely theirs.

Hey there, lovebirds and adventure seekers!

Kotsy here, your favorite photographer with a knack for capturing those “OMG-YES!” moments. Today, I’m taking you on a little journey to one of Toronto’s hidden gems – Snake Island on the Toronto Islands. This isn’t just a story about a beautiful spot in our city; it’s about John and Carolina’s magical proposal.

So, grab your virtual binoculars, and let’s dive in!

How They Got Here

Our stars, John and Carolina, first crossed paths on Bumble. Talk about a modern-day fairy tale, right? Their connection was instant, and their love for each other and being with each other quickly lead to talks about planning a family, so the decision to pop the question was an obvious one!

The Perfect Spot: Snake Island

John wanted an outdoor spot near water (a favourite for Carolina) with a killer view for the big question, and Snake Island checked all the boxes plus provided some privacy to boot. With big adventures being something they both adore – the journey of an Island trip made perfect sense.

Picture this: a tiny beach on a serene island, the sound of waves crashing and the ever-growing iconic Toronto skyline as a backdrop. If that doesn’t scream “romantic proposal spot,” I don’t know what does!

The Proposal: A Mix of Confidence and Nerves

John was all cool and collected until the moment of truth – getting down on one knee and pulling the ring box out… sideways – oops! Based on her priceless reaction to the proposal, you would’ve never guessed that earlier Carolina and her hawk eyes noticed something off with John’s pants pocket, which couldn’t fully contain the not-so-slim ring box. But let’s be honest, it’s these little hiccups that make the best stories!

Capturing the Moment

John knew the only way to capture this important moment properly was to bring in someone with experience and ability to be extremely stealthy. In this case – hiding inside a small forest next to the beach. As John and Carolina looked back at their photos, they knew he made the right call. Their favorite shot? The moment John popped the question causing Carolina to cover her face in pure bliss. Classic!

Advice from the Heart

John’s tip for anyone planning their own proposal: make it meaningful. It’s all about what resonates with you and your partner, which will surely add to the specialness of the story when you look back on it.

Josh and Caitlin first contacted each other through a mutual friend at a party. Surprisingly, it wasn’t until 2 years later that they went on a date after connecting online. During the first date at Bar Volo, it was clear that they were meant for each other. That bar is now officially closed, but Josh still sought to propose to her by the bar’s location in -20 degree weather, a testament to just how special their first date was to him.

After they met at the Bar Volo, they went out to enjoy a committed relationship which lasted for the next three years. That was more than enough time for Josh to realize that he wanted her as his life partner forever.

As an engagement photographer, I am thrilled to capture this important chapter in so many couples’ lives. However, I found this engagement session to be especially exciting, as it was my first time seeing Neon Demon Studio in person, let alone having a photo session inside it. Up until this point, I had only seen photos of the studio on Instagram. This studio is known for having a huge collection of neon signs.

While this may have been cool to some, it was quite incredible to me because it made our photo shoot incredibly unique. Most of the engagement sessions I’ve done so far have been in parks and other places with beautiful scenery. I was over the moon to be able to do this in a setting with a totally different kind of beauty to it.
